I suspect, but cannot prove, that some x86 assembly call is being mangled by DOSBox-X. 86Box, which strives to be as pedantically accurate a simulation of real-world hardware as possible, does not exhibit this issue. However, setting up 86Box comes with a whole day of learning about the parts and pieces of assembling one's own raw DOS system from virtual components, installing from diskettes, and all of the old-school troubleshooting that entails. It's a commitment, is what I'm saying.
