Memory in most cases on both servers and desktops is dominated by two types of pages. One is anonymous pages, like your program heap and stack data. The other is file pages, that is, the disk cache. If you use zram without a physical backing device, you effectively lock all anonymous data in RAM. When memory pressure hits, the kernel has no choice but to aggressively evict the file cache to make room.
